Here are 10 useful tips for learning and knowing how to cope with the winter
snow removal season -- from the Eagle County Road and Bridge department.
- Snow removal crews begin working in the very early morning,
usually around 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. and continue until all routes are
complete. The crews are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Main roads are plowed first, which are the school bus routes and
emergency routes (aka Priority One roads). The side streets which are
the residential collector streets, school and business accesses, and
lesser traveled streets such as cul-de-sacs are plowed next (Priority
Two and Three roads). Sometimes it may be later in the day before the
Priority Two and Priority Three roads are plowed.
- Be patient with the snow removal process and drive with caution around the equipment that is used.
- Be
sure to educate children about the dangers of playing near snow removal
equipment and to not dig snow forts or caves in snow banks.
- Darkness comes early this time of year. Wear reflective clothing if you are jogging or walking along a road in darkness.
- Try
to wait to shovel driveways until after the snow plows have finished
and do not put snow or any other debris in the roadway per Colorado
Revised Statute section 42-4-1406 and 42-4-411.
- Try to wait to
place trash cans out for pick up until snowplows are finished and to
retrieve them as soon as they are emptied. Remember that Eagle County
ordinance mandates that trash cans be put out the morning of pick up
only and that they are taken in again the same day.
- Be aware that it is illegal to park on county maintained roads or the county right-of-way.
- The
county road right-of-way normally extends approximately 12.5 feet off
the edge of the road which is often into the property owner's
landscaping. The right-of-way is intended to be utilized for snow
storage, so it is recommended that any valuable landscaping be placed
outside this area. Shrubs and other valuable landscaping items may
become damaged from snow removal equipment and the weight of the snow.
It is the responsibility of the property owner to repair and maintain
the landscaping within the right-of-way.
